Jams F. Kennedy - Women Overseas - Produced by: Joker & Rustie

“Badbeat exclusive drip of Jams F. Kennedy’s offering from the Dubstep LA mix that just dropped.  If you don’t got it get it, the mix was crazy (done by the one and only Plastician).  Most everybody on it “went in”, including Snoop Dogg, Xzibit, Sir Jams, and Badbeat bredren 12th planet.  But Mr. Kennedy’s joint is the only vocal on there that doesn’t lean towards the aggressive undercurrent of dubstep that inspires the rollicking hoods up “dudestep” stereotype.  A song “for the ladies”, albeit with no less masculine panache, Jams channels the best of vintage Lox with a wild southern swag.  Dig in.” - Esquire

Silversun Pickups - Panic Switch - Bobby Evans Remix

I’ve been waiting a sec for Dangerbird to release this jam but perfect timing on their parts since Silversun Pickups have just hit #1 on the Billboard rock charts. It’s actually the first time in 11 years that an independent artist has done that. Congrats to the band, the label, and producer Dave Cooley.

“Bobby Evans has taken the reigns at remixing the chart-topper, using industrial touches and heavily thumping drums…more rocker than rave-hit and not for the faint of heart.” - Filter Magazine

I started this remix only knowing that I wanted to keep the entire vocal. In most cases I strip a track down to its most minimal structure then slowly build from there but once I pulled out the guitars and drums the vocal just wouldn’t sit right in anything else, it seemed overly soothing and lost the force that the original had. I was laying in bed one night and realized a minimal approach was all wrong, it needed to be full and loud, overly aggressive and distorted.

I went back to the studio and started re-compressing all of the guitar and drum stems, pushing them to distort, record them, then push them back out to the compressor again and EQing through the board as they came back. After that I sent the drums back out through a transient designer to bring even more of their characteristics to the front making them very loud, full and distorted. I wanted them to take up as much room as possible. From there I broke the tracks down to their most basic parts and notes, keeping the original song structure but not the structure of the songs parts. I went through cutting and repeating bass notes and drum hits, removing the melody from the verses, and made the track build to a wide open chorus only to then fall apart to feedback and near slience. In the end I added no extra instruments to the original, its all distortion, feedback, and editing. Enjoy.

The Works - Live and Direct feat. Jams - Bobby Evans Remix

Copenhagen’s The Works have just released the fantastic EP “Yokohama” featuring Jams F. Kennedy available now on limited edition vinyl and iTunes.

“These guys plainly and simply snap necks day, in day out.” - FACT Magazine

So true. I worked from those neck snapping traits and pieced together a crawling bass and staccato harp remix of their jam with Jams, Live and Direct. Download now @320 includes the instrumental and a cappella.

Evans & Eagles Mixtape $7

2007

I thought these where sold out for good but I just found a stack of CDs in a box filled up with money. If you want to support cop one. If you just wanna listen download it for free.

“Hot new mix from Evans & Eagles, aka The LA Dream Team, aka Bobby Evans from rap duo Brother Reade and OG Hollerboard alum Desert Eagles. It might sound trite, but I can’t even begin to describe this mix. It hops genres like nobody’s business, mixing songs that have no business being mixed and making every track involved sound damn good in the process. (And when I say mixing, I mean like party mixing, not mashemups - though there are some of those, too.) If you’re a fan of crazy diverse mixes from the likes of Hollertronix, The Rub and Caps & Jones, this is for you. It’s that well done. Some names to give you an idea what you’re looking at here, though you should really just hear it with your own two noiseholes: Freestyle, Punjabi MC, Prince, Stardust, MJ, Outkast, Lil Jon, Corey Hart, Rob Base, Dizzee Rascal, Elephant Man, Daft Punk, DJ Mehdi, Pet Shop Boys, Al B. Sure, David Banner, Wiley and more, if you can believe it. Real fun stuff here. Over 53 minutes total.”- Turntable Lab

How I Really Be: Squid Beam

Monday, April 6th, 2009

Hello all.
We put together an evening at space 1520 (the urban outfitters gallery/retail complex across from Amoeba records), and we wanted it to encompass the disparate scenes that influence our jams locally.  Guests in the program include: Them Jeans, SK87, and our very own Nick Dewitt.  Come out thursday and get busy to some club shit and brain out hard to some weirdo jams.  Thursday, April 9th.  6pm.  Come out before you go to goth night.

Might as well hit y’all off with the new collaboration featuring Nash (SK87), and the almighty Micah James. The offering demonstrates a new sound, dubbed ‘neo-ignorant’ by more than a few elated critics.

Attempt to Avoid Cultural Imperialism

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

EMYND, Brother Reade

From Emynd:

“As a side note regarding my “Mad Again (NOLA Bounce Remix)” that I feel necessary to make clear anytime anyone posts about it on the internet, I made a very significant effort to keep it as traditionally NOLA BOUNCE as possible. Even though I’m not from New Orleans and have had very little interaction with Bounce culture, I felt that making this remix would be a good way for me to hopefully make some people interested in the New Orleans Bounce music that I’ve grown to love over the past couple years. In order to do this with some level of self-respect in tact and to attempt to avoid the cultural imperialism I often find myself rallying against, I made a very clear and deliberate effort to make this remix a blatant IMITATION of my favorite Bounce artists and producers. Not only did I sample the New Orleans Bounce staples (the Triggerman bells, Triggerman breaks, the “WHO!” and the “Alright!” from The Showboys “Drag Rap” as well as the “Rock the Beat”/”Brown Beat” drum break), but I also very deliberately sampled vocals from Gotty Boi Chris, Dime Gyrl Drell and De Ja Vu, and imitated the production styles of my favorite Bounce producers: Blaza, Peacachoo, Blaqnmild (aka Blaq Biggi Blaq), and Took. If you’re at all into my Bounce remix, I highly suggest you visit the linked myspace pages above and purchase some of that AUTHENTIC New Orleans Bounce music.

Anyway, hope you like it.”

Make sure to check out Cross Faded Bacon for more Emynd and Bo Bliz. If that ain’t enough there is an interview of them dudes at 215hiphop.

Sleng Teng

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

“There had been Jamaican records featuring drum machines before…But when Jammy’s unleashed Wayne Smith’s ‘Under Me Sleng Teng‘ in February 1985, it blew the old style away. This was not an electronic drum beat used to impersonate a band. It was a complete and powerful thing in itself, unashamed to call itself electronic - or “digital” as the new style would be called. Created on a little Casio keyboard…From this point on, Jammy would not bother with a band anymore…”
